Zambales Province

The province of Zambales on the western coast of Luzon is not exceptionally large. It has an area of 3,654 square kilometers (1407 square miles), which is slightly smaller than the US state of Rhode Island, and the same size as Placer County in California. Zambales is the 35th largest province. The population is almost 600,000.

For many years the province was famed for its mangoes. Most attention was focused on the area at the southern border (northern border of Bataan province) which is adjacent to the United States Navy base at Subic Bay and the autonomous municipality of Olongapo City. Except for some chromite mining, the Zambales Mountains were not tall, scenic or especially distinguished.
